Democrats have been talking more and more about the impeachment of U.S. President Donald J. Trump in the last few weeks, with one Democrat in Congress even introducing a resolution with seven articles of impeachment.

And while impeachment doesn’t have a chance to happen as long as Republicans control Congress, both parties appear to be looking ahead to the 2026 midterm elections, with those midterms possibly serving as a referendum on whether or not Trump will be impeached a third time.

It’s gotten to the point where pollsters are asking about impeachment, and one of them shows a majority of those asked support impeachment.

Support For Another Trump Impeachment?

A poll released in mid-April by Research Collaborative and ASO Communications found that among likely voters, 52 percent support impeaching Trump.

The number goes up to 55 percent among independents; even 20 percent of Republicans are on board with impeachment.

The poll also found that 46 percent of likely voters “believe Congress has a duty to pursue impeachment,” although another 17 percent agreed that Congress should “refrain from impeachment out of concern that it would fail, seem performative, or politically damage its supporters.”

It should be noted that this appears to be a progressive-leaning polling outfit, as hinted by the language in the introductory write-up, which isn’t the sort of thing a nonpartisan pollster would lead with.

“Since returning to office, the MAGA regime and its billionaire allies have taken aggressive actions that many view as a hostile takeover of our government institutions. These actions include repeated violations of our constitutional rights and disregard for the fundamental principles of liberty and justice for all. Most Americans see impeachment as the legitimate and necessary response to defend the Constitution and protect democratic governance,” the introduction says.

It’s also notable that the poll, at least based on those findings, does not ask which specific thing they want Trump impeached for. Those who favor Trump’s impeachment tend to believe there are many reasons for doing so.

What Trump Did

While critics say Thanedar’s articles of impeachment are timed to help the Michigan Congressman deflect from a pair of primary challenges, the resolution is certainly detailed and specific.

It touches on a wide variety of actions, all carried out by Trump in the early going of his second presidency. This includes deportations, impounding of federal funds, “misuse of the Department of Justice,” retaliation against his critics, threatening sovereign nations with takeovers, “extortionate settlements,” “soliciting foreign emoluments,” and overstepping limits on presidential authority.

“Donald Trump has repeatedly demonstrated that he is unfit to serve as President and represents a clear and present danger to our nation’s constitution and our democracy,” Rep. Thanedar said when he introduced the resolution. “His unlawful actions have subverted the justice system, violated the separation of powers, and placed personal power and self-interest above public service. We cannot wait for more damage to be done. Congress must act.”

Impeachment 2026

A CNN report last week looked at how the impeachment question might play out in the midterm elections. The story made clear that while Democrats are divided on whether to pursue impeachment- while Republicans will certainly play up the possibility of another third impeachment, as a pitch to voters to encourage them to keep the GOP in power in Congress.

“It is a key priority of his, obviously, to keep the House majority, because he knows what would happen if we didn’t,” Speaker Mike Johnson told CNN, after meeting with Trump to discuss midterm strategy. “Democrats have already said they’re gonna try another baseless impeachment. They’ll do their best to grind the agenda to a halt.”

Both parts of Johnson’s statement are untrue. “Democrats” have expressed support for impeachment, although they as a party have certainly not determined that they will pursue such a thing. Also, his statement implies that the Democrats think of the impeachment as “baseless,” when that’s clearly not the case.
