Key Points – The US Air Force’s deployment of up to six B-2 Spirit stealth bombers to Diego Garcia in March 2025 sent a clear message to Iran amid escalating regional tensions.
-While the US hopes for a peaceful resolution to Iran’s nuclear ambitions, the B-2 provides a unique and powerful military option.
-The bomber is the only aircraft certified to carry the 30,000-pound GBU-57 Massive Ordnance Penetrator (MOP), a “bunker buster” capable of destroying deeply buried and hardened targets.
-This makes the B-2 the ideal platform to strike Iran’s underground nuclear facilities, such as the one in the Zagros Mountains, should diplomacy fail and military action become necessary.
Why the B-2 Bomber is America’s Ultimate Weapon Against Iran’s Bunkers
In April 2025, the US Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth said it was up to Iran to decide whether the US deployment of B-2 bombers to within range of the Middle East was a message to Tehran or not.
His other direct-to-the-mullahs message was that he hoped the US-Iran negotiations over Tehran’s nuclear program meant that the issue could be resolved peacefully.
Since those talks have now collapsed and Israel has already attacked Iran, the issue of avoiding military conflict over Iran’s nuclear ambitions now seems like a moot point.
But what is still up in the air is whether the B-2s would be engaged to attack Iran.
As many as six B-2 bombers were flown out in March for a long-term deployment on the US-British military base located on the Indian Ocean island of Diego Garcia.
US officials made the notification of the move to Reuters at the same time that there was a US bombing campaign in Yemen and escalating tensions with Iran.
Following the notification, a US Defense Department spokesman announced that “The United States and its partners remain committed to regional security … and are prepared to respond to any state or nonstate actor seeking to broaden or escalate conflict in the region,”.
B-2 Spirit Stealth Bomber: The US’s Most Powerful Weapon
There are only 19 B-2 bombers in the entire US Air Force (USAF) inventory, and they are at the top of the list of vital US “national assets”.
For this reason, they are used sparingly, and usually only in cases where the combination of their low radar cross section, long range, and ability to carry heavy weapons loads is both needed and cannot be performed by other aircraft in the US Air Force (USAF) inventory.
The aircraft not only features stealth technology but is also equipped to carry the heaviest US bombs and even nuclear weapons.
Military aviation specialists point out that this makes the B-2 the ideal weapons platform if you want to operate with impunity in the Middle East.
“It’s a great asset … it sends a message to everybody,” Hegseth said as he spoke to reporters during an April trip to Panama.
“President Trump’s been clear … Iran should not have a nuclear bomb,” he said.
“We very much hope – the President is focused on doing that peacefully.”
B-2 Bomber: The Overkill Factor
Since being sent to be based on Diego Garcia, B-2 bombers have been dispatched to strike sites controlled by the Yemen-based Houthi rebels as part of an escalating war between US forces (mostly the US Navy) and the Iran-backed non-state actor.
However, several defense analysts call out the use of the strategic bomber in this theatre is overkill.
But the one weapon that may yet be needed in the conflict with Iran that the B-2 is uniquely equipped to deliver is the 30,000-pound GBU-57 Massive Ordnance Penetrator.
This weapon is designed to destroy targets deep underground, as it can burrow deep beneath the surface before detonating. It is what is colloquially referred to as a “bunker buster.”
Many of the Iranian nuclear facilities are reported to be located deep underground in just these kinds of deep underground facilities.
The IAF has a full range of air-to-ground weapons, including several bunker-buster-type munitions.
However, the IAF lacks an air-launched weapon with the penetration capability of the GBU-57 or an aircraft designed to drop from the high altitudes that this kind of weapon requires.
More than two years ago, the AP reported that workers in Iran were building a nuclear facility in the Zagros Mountains in central Iran that is so deep that it is “likely beyond the range of a last-ditch US weapon designed to destroy such sites.”
Likely or not, overkill, the B-2 Spirit stealth bomber may be pressed into service before the Iran nuclear program saga is over.

According to numerous very well-informed experts, the B-2 is not too hot, i.e., it is not that stealthy.
Not as stealthy as it has been portrayed to be.
Thus, it’s a great opportunity for countries like china to send experts to iran to start learning a thing (or two) about the b-2.And the f-35 as well.
But will xi jinping agree to that.
Xi has shown that he’s too willing to sideline and betray or shortchange allies if it benefits his private & personal relationship with the adversaries of china’s allies to do so.
To HELL with xi jinping.
