Key Points and Summary on Trump and Ukraine – Just as President Trump signals a major policy shift back toward robustly arming Ukraine, Russia has unleashed another massive aerial assault, launching over 130 drones and multiple missiles at Ukrainian cities.
-The attack is seen as a defiant message from Moscow, coming hours before Trump is expected to announce a substantial new weapons package for Kyiv.
-Following a “disappointing” call with Putin, Trump is now reportedly looking to expedite aid, including Patriot systems.
-This escalating cycle of Russian bombardment and renewed Western resolve places Ukraine at the center of a volatile and unpredictable new phase of the war.
Russia Hits Ukraine Again with Big Drone Attack
Ahead of a “major” statement expected from U.S. President Donald Trump today about American military aid for Ukraine, Russia launched four missiles and 136 drones into Ukraine on Monday morning.
The strikes, revealed by Ukraine’s air force, are just the latest in a long string of escalating Russian attacks on Ukrainian urban population centers.
According to a statement issued on Instagram, 108 drones were shot down or neutralized during the attack, which began on Sunday night and extended into Monday morning. A total of 28 drones slipped through Ukrainian defenses and hit 10 locations. According to the Air Force, four locations reported some damage caused by falling drone fragments.
During the same timeframe, Russian forces claimed that they had intercepted 11 Ukrainian drones.
The bombardment of Ukrainian cities has escalated in recent weeks as President Trump has publicly criticized Russian President Vladimir Putin for “throwing bullsh*t” at the United States, slamming the world leader for saying the right things over the telephone but failing to act in good faith during negotiations with Ukrainian negotiators.
The strikes come ahead of an announcement expected today, in which President Trump is expected to announce that the United States will resume shipments of defensive and offensive weapons to Ukraine. On Sunday, Trump said that the United States would provide more “sophisticated” weaponry to Kyiv.
Speaking to CBS News on Sunday night, Senator Lindsey Graham said that he expects the president’s position on Ukraine to shift dramatically, and that the White House would announce a substantial new weapons shipment that will begin “in the coming days.”
“The game, regarding Putin’s invasion of Russia, is about to change,” Graham said. “I expect, in the coming days, you will see weapons flowing at a record level to help Ukraine defend themselves.” Graham even suggested that the president could announce that the United States would sell weapons to Ukraine.
Today’s Talks
President Donald Trump met with NATO Secretary General Mark Rutte in the White House at 10:00 am local time in a meeting expected to focus on the war in Ukraine as well as ongoing efforts among NATO nations to dramatically increase defense spending.
Meanwhile, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy confirmed on Monday that he had held “productive” talks with Keith Kellogg, the U.S. envoy to Ukraine.
In a post on X, Zelenskyy said that he discussed what the U.S. and Ukraine “can practically do” to bring the war to an end more quickly, claiming that strengthening Ukrainian air defenses and procuring more weapons in collaboration with European partners would end the war more quickly.
“This includes strengthening Ukraine’s air defence, joint production, and procurement of defence weapons in collaboration with Europe,” Zelenskyy said. “And of course, sanctions against Russia and those who help it.”
