Key Points and Summary – Hours after President Trump hosted Volodymyr Zelenskyy and European leaders in Washington, Russia unleashed its largest August strike—about 270 drones and 10 missiles—hitting energy sites in Poltava and damaging a gas transmission facility, officials said.

-Ukraine answered with drone attacks on two Russian ammo depots in occupied Luhansk.

-The dueling strikes underline how far a ceasefire still is, even as Trump pushes a one-on-one between Putin and Zelenskyy and casts himself as mediator.

-Zelenskyy “emerged unscathed” from the White House meeting, easing fears of U.S. pressure for immediate concessions—but despite friendlier optics, peace remains distant.

Ukraine Under Attack By Russia In Massive Drone Strike

On Monday, not long after President Donald Trump met at the White House with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy and several European leaders, Russia launched a major drone attack, consisting of 280 drones and missiles.

According to ABC News, which cited the Ukrainian Air Force, Russia’s attack was the largest of August.

“The air force said Russia launched 270 drones and 10 missiles into Ukraine, of which 30 drones and six missiles were intercepted or suppressed. The air force reported the impacts of 40 drones and four missiles across 16 locations, with debris reportedly falling in three locations,” ABC News reported.

The focus of the attacks was on energy infrastructure in the central Poltava region, according to the ABC report.

Details of the Attack

“Several dozen drones simultaneously attacked a production facility within Ukraine’s gas transmission system. Early reports indicate damage to the facility’s ground-level infrastructure. Specialised personnel are now carrying out a technical inspection of the equipment and assessing the extent of the damage,” The Ministry of Energy said on Telegram, as translated by Ukrainska Pravda.

“The enemy continues to carry out systematic terrorist attacks against Ukraine’s energy infrastructure, which is a direct violation of international humanitarian law. Since March 2025 there have been over 2,900 attacks on energy infrastructure.”

Meanwhile, a Ukrainian Attack

The same day, Ukraine launched a drone attack of its own, striking two Russian ammo depots in Luhansk Oblast, the Kyiv Independent reported, citing the Security Service of Ukraine (SBU).

“The destruction of enemy ammunition directly helps our soldiers, who are bravely holding back Russian assaults,” SBU said on Telegram, as translated by the Independent.

Where Does The Monday Meeting Leave Things?

The attacks show that neither a ceasefire nor peace is quite at hand between Russia and Ukraine. The question is whether progress was made as a result of the meetings in Washington.

According to the New York Times, President Zelenskyy “emerged unscathed from his Monday meeting at the White House with Mr. Trump, unlike the situation after their disastrous last meeting in the Oval Office in February.”

“Overall, I’m more optimistic after these meetings than before,” Oleksandr Merezhko, chairman of the foreign affairs committee in the Ukrainian Parliament, told the Times. “My nightmare of Trump presenting Zelensky with an unacceptable ultimatum in front of correspondents in the Oval Office did not materialize. The atmosphere was friendly enough.”

None of the other worst-case scenarios, from a Ukrainian standpoint, came to pass on Monday.

“There was no — at least from what we can tell — aggressive pressure from Trump demanding that Ukraine immediately agree to territorial concessions to Russia or make unilateral concessions in favor of a peace deal,” Volodymyr Fesenko, a leading political analyst in Ukraine, told the newspaper. “That did not happen, and many were deeply worried it would.”

A Bigger Ukraine Meeting Coming Soon?

Per CNN, Trump is now pushing for a one-on-one meeting between Putin and Zelenskyy, to which

“I sort of set it up with Putin and Zelensky, and you know, they’re the ones that have to call the shots, we’re, we’re 7,000 miles away,” Trump said on Fox News, after the Monday meeting at the White House. “I called President Putin, and we’re trying to work out a meeting with President Zelensky and we’ll see what happens there and then if that works out, if it works out, then I’ll go to the trilat and close it up.”

He added that he believes the two leaders are“getting along a little bit better than I thought,” although it’s not clear why the president feels that way.

“I think the fact that maybe they’re getting along a little bit better than I thought otherwise, I wouldn’t have set up the two meeting. I would have set up the three, a trilat, but I think they’re doing a little bit better. There’s been tremendous bad blood,” Trump said in the Fox interview.
